While you’re busy decluttering your closet and sweeping away the cobwebs, why not give your body a “spring clean,” too?

If you’re still feeling weighed down by winter’s indulgences, the refreshing, yet balanced energy of spring is a great time to take on a healthy detox or cleanse. A gentle diet detox can help you clear away lingering toxins, flush the digestive system, and revitalize your energy so you’re ready to enjoy spring and summer to the fullest.

But don’t worry – you don’t have to dive head-first into a juice cleanse or struggle through a fast to reap the benefits of a detox. By fueling up on healthy, vibrant, detoxifying spring salads, you can enhance your body’s natural detoxification and revive your energy.

Spring Root Veggie & Watercress Salad

Get the Recipe

When you want a hearty lunch that doesn’t weigh you down, this bright and vibrant watercress salad does the trick. The combination of roasted beets and creamy ricotta gives this salad richness and satisfies your hunger. Meanwhile, the crisp watercress and tangy vinaigrette keep the whole meal light and balanced.

Spring Detox Benefits

  • Watercress
Watercress is a powerful leafy green that supports liver function and promotes the elimination of toxins from the body. Along with containing high levels of antioxidants, this green is also high in vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin A, calcium, and iron. It has also been shown to reduce high cholesterol levels and support healthy weight loss.
  • BeetsClose-Up Shot of Beetroot Salad
This recipe calls for spring-like versions of the hearty winter beet: yellow beets and pink Chioggia (candy stripe) beets, but you can use traditional ruby red beets if you prefer. Beets contain compounds called betalains, which can help support liver detoxification by enhancing the liver’s ability to process and eliminate toxins. Betalains have also been shown to reduce high glycemia and may support healthy digestion, blood sugar levels, and weight loss. They are also known for their high betaine content, which helps to improve bile flow (another crucial function of the liver).
  • Wheat berries
Wheat berries are a great way to add protein and fiber to your salads. These hearty grains are the whole, unprocessed kernels of wheat. They have been shown to boost your energy and keep you feeling full by regulating your blood sugar levels. If you are allergic to wheat, try quinoa instead for similar benefits.

Detox Citrus Salad with AvocadoHalved ripe avocado placed on pink background

Get the Recipe

Juicy, creamy, and bursting with flavors, this detox citrus salad is the perfect way to celebrate the flavors of spring and summer while staying healthy. One of the best things about this salad is that it’s versatile – feel free to mix up your leafy greens, use different kinds of nuts, or add a healthy protein like grilled salmon or roasted chickpeas to make it a meal.

  • Grapefruit
Grapefruit has long been considered a “diet” food, but it’s so much more than a low-calorie treat. Grapefruit is high in fiber, antioxidants, and water – an essential element of healthy detoxification. It also boasts a low glycemic index, which means it won’t cause your blood sugar levels to spike (which can help prevent hormonal issues like insulin resistance). The high vitamin C and antioxidant content of grapefruit also helps reduce inflammation to support your immune system through seasonal changes.
  • Avocado
Avocado is a nutrient-dense superfood, and this recipe uses it in two ways: generous chunks of fresh avocado and avocado oil for the dressing. Studies show that eating avocado can help sustain your natural energy levels (and keep cravings for sweets and junk food at bay). This is likely due to avocados’ high levels of healthy fats, including omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Pistachios
The liver is the primary organ responsible for detoxification, and it needs certain nutrients to function properly. Pistachios are a good source of several of these nutrients, including vitamin E, B vitamins, and magnesium. Pistachios also contain antioxidants (like polyphenols and flavonoids) which are known to protect the liver from oxidative stress and inflammation.

Indian-Style Dill & Turmeric Potato Salad

Get the Recipe

Salad doesn’t always have to mean a big bowl of green vegetables! This healthy take on a traditional potato salad offers a flavorful spin on the old favorite. Packed with healthy herbs and spices, it makes the perfect side dish to bring to a spring picnic or summer barbecue.

  • Turmeric
Turmeric adds earthly flavors and a golden color to many Indian dishes. But it also adds powerful anti-inflammatory and detoxification benefits! Turmeric contains an active compound called curcumin, which has been shown to support the body’s natural detoxification processes. It also helps neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in the body – including the Liver.
  • Dill
Not only does dill bring a light and fresh flavor to this potato salad, but it contains several vitamins and antioxidants to support liver, immune, and digestive health. Dill contains compounds that have been shown to reduce liver fat and cholesterol. Dill’s antioxidants also combat oxidative stress to reduce the burden on the liver and support your immune system.
  • Chili flakes
Want to wake up your senses (and your metabolism)? Chili flakes, or crushed red pepper flakes, are used in this recipe to add invigorating heat. Along with offering a pinch of spice, these chili flakes also help support weight loss, detoxification, and circulation. That’s because chili flakes contain a compound called capsaicin, which may increase metabolism and promote the burning of calories. Capsaicin may also help reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness so you’re less likely to overeat.
