6 Reasons to Stay Hydrated this Summer

Photo of a Woman Holding a Glass of Water

In Arizona, we’re no strangers to dry air and scorching heat. Here, staying hydrated is important year-round, but even more so during our hot summer months when even a brisk walk can leave you drenched in sweat.  Beyond ensuring your body has enough water to carry out its essential functions (like digestion or maintaining homeostasis), staying hydrated also helps you feel focused, prevents pain, and slows the signs of aging.  If you’re someone who struggles to meet your daily water intake goals, this blog is for you. Read on to remind yourself of 6 good reasons to make hydration a top health priority this summer (and why water might not always be the best way to hydrate).

But First, What Does it Mean to Be Well-Hydrated?Green cactuses growing in nature

Before you start chugging gallons of water, let’s get clear on what optimal hydration looks and feels like. If you’re well-hydrated, your urine should be pale yellow or clear, you will be urinating regularly (about every 2-4 hours), and you will not feel thirsty. On the other hand, if you are dehydrated, you may experience symptoms such as thirst, dry mouth, dark urine, fatigue, dizziness, or headache. Your skin and hair may also feel dry, and you may notice fewer trips to the bathroom. You can have too much of a good thing. Drinking too much water puts excess wear and tear on your kidneys and can even lead to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, headache, or confusion.  Ideally, we’d aim for optimal hydration – where we have plenty of fresh, clean water to hydrate our cells and function well, but not overload the body. Aim to drink somewhere between 8-12 cups throughout the day, especially if you are active or spending time outside. Adjust your water intake depending on your age, gender, activity level, and overall health (this tool helps you calculate how much is right for you). And of course, listen to your body. Drink when you are thirsty, or slow down your intake if you start to feel nauseous or bloated.

6 Reasons to Prioritize Hydration in Summer

  1. Hydration optimizes body temperature. Our bodies are made up of about 60% water. So, it’s no wonder that our body temperature is so closely tied to our water levels. For example, when we get too hot, our bodies sweat to cool down. But if we’re not properly hydrated, we won’t be able to produce enough sweat to regulate our body temperature. This can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke, which can be dangerous and even life-threatening – especially if you live in a hot climate. Staying hydrated ensures you have enough water to replenish lost fluids from sweat to avoid a serious health issue.
  2. Staying hydrated helps you flush out toxins. Water is essential for detoxification because it helps the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system remove toxins from the body. Water helps the liver break down toxins and supports the kidneys in excreting waste products. The lymphatic system also needs water to function properly and remove toxins. When you are hydrated, the body can effectively remove toxins before they build up in your system and cause symptoms. Sweating is also a great way to release toxins, and since you’ll likely be sweating more in summer, use this to your advantage. Embrace a light sweat but be sure to replenish with fluids after to rehydrate and flush out those toxins.

  3. Hydrated skin is healthy skin.If you want healthy, youthful, glowing summer skin, look to your water bottle. Water helps keep our skin hydrated and plump, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dehydration, on the other hand, can lead to dry, dull skin, and even contribute to skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. Staying hydrated helps your skin clear away toxins, sun damage, and inflammation that lead to dull skin, aging, and breakouts while replenishing the skin’s moisture and cellular health.
  4. Staying hydrated improves digestion and metabolism. If you struggle with constipation, bloating, sluggish digestion, or weight gain, dehydration could be part of the problem. We need water to break down food in the stomach and intestines so nutrients can be absorbed, and waste can move efficiently through the digestive system. Staying hydrated can also help you lose weight. Drinking more water increases the number of calories your body burns, reduces mindless snacking, and boosts your resting metabolism.

  5. Hydration supports hormone balance. Many hormones are made of water molecules. When we are dehydrated, hormone production and regulation become disrupted which leads to imbalances that can affect mood, energy levels, and overall health. We also need water to process hormones; hydration helps the liver properly metabolize hormones and remove excess hormones from the body. And lastly, staying hydrated prevents stress and high cortisol levels – as well as the negative effects they have on our hormone balance.
  6. Healthy hydration means more energy and better performance.

When we’re dehydrated, our bodies have to work harder to function properly. Over time, this can lead to increased fatigue and low energy levels. Drinking enough water is a simple yet crucial step to replenish your energy and make it easier for your brain and body to tackle your daily tasks. Want to take it to the next level? Healthy hydration is also key if you want to run longer, climb higher, and train harder. Active people lose vast amounts of water through sweat. But if that water isn’t replenished, it can lead to extreme fatigue, muscle cramps, and poor performance. Staying hydrated before, during, and after exercise will help you improve your overall physical performance, endurance, and recovery.

While everyday tap water (or even reverse osmosis water) is the most common way to stay hydrated, it’s not the only way – or the most effective. Without any electrolytes to move water into the cells, the body can’t absorb the water as well and most of it flushes through as urine. To get the most out of your water, add a spritz or lemon, a pinch of natural sea salt, or trade plain water for herbal infusions.  Or, try IV hydration and nutrition therapy – a simple method that rehydrates the body quickly and efficiently. How does it work? IV therapy delivers fluids, electrolytes, and nutrients directly into the bloodstream via an intravenous catheter. This allows for rapid absorption and utilization of fluids and nutrients by the body, making it an excellent choice for individuals who need fast and effective rehydration.  At Moringa Natural Health Center, we customize our IV hydration and nutrient therapy to meet your specific needs. Our formulations help you target specific concerns such as dehydration, fatigue, weight loss, anti-aging, and more.  Want to embrace this summer feeling energized and refreshed?
