Male Menopause: What it is and How to Stay Balanced

Our natural hormone-balancing tips for men

If you’re a man over the age of 50, you may be noticing some changes in the way you feel.

Are you less energized than you used to be?

Do you struggle with depression or irritability more than you used to?

Have you put on weight or lost muscle mass?

Has the passion left the bedroom?

While these are all normal occurrences with life’s many fluctuations, they could also be the result of your shifting hormones

Men, like women, experience hormone changes as they age. But for men, this experience is far more gradual, variable, and less drastic than women’s – which is why it often gets overlooked.

Read on to learn more about “male menopause” and what you can do to revive your vitality and live well at any age.

At Moringa Natural Health, we have treatment plans for menopause and hormone imbalance. We personalize each plan according to each person’s unique biological makeup. Want to learn more about our treatment plans? Schedule your free appointment with Dr. Fernandez today!

What is Andropause?

Andropause is a term that describes the age-related changes that occur in male hormone levels. It is typically seen in men over 50, and is often referred to as “male menopause” – the male equivalent of the hormone shifts women experience in their later years.

But, the way men’s hormones change is significantly different from how menopause affects women. For that reason, andropause is a better, more accurate term.

What Happens in Andropause?

The most obvious change in andropause is a drop in testosterone production. Testosterone is a hormone produced in the testes best known for fueling your sex drive.

But aside from libido and fertility, testosterone is also a crucial hormone for many body processes. How energized you feel, your physical and mental stamina, how well you respond to stress, your muscle mass, and even your skin health are all dependent on healthy levels of testosterone.

Researchers estimate that testosterone decreases by about 1% each year after the age of 30 or 40. As testosterone production decreases over time, you may notice some sexual, physical, and emotional changes. Lower libido, lower energy, reduced muscle mass, and smaller testes are common. Many men also report symptoms of fatigue, depression, and changes in their sleep.

Unlike menopause (which “turns off” a woman’s ability to get pregnant), andropause does not shut down your reproductive system. But, you may notice some sexual symptoms as a result of declining hormone levels.

Is There a Treatment for Andropause and Low Testosterone?

If you’re going through andropause or want to prevent andropause, you may be wondering, what can I do to slow – or stop – these changes?

And if you are, you’re not alone.

The most common conventional therapy for andropause is called testosterone replacement therapy. This therapy involves taking synthetic testosterone in the form of a pellet, patch, gel, or injection to improve symptoms related to low testosterone.

While this therapy helps some men, others experience negative side effects:

  • Worsening sleep apnea
  • Increased acne or skin irritation
  • Enlarged breasts
  • Reduced sperm production
  • Shrunken testicles
  • Increased risk of blood clots and pulmonary embolisms
  • Stimulation of benign prostatic hyperplasia or growth of existing prostate cancer

The good news is that there are many other ways you can support the production of testosterone naturally – without relying on potentially damaging hormone replacement therapies.

How to Balance Hormones Naturally in Andropause

    1. Reduce your stress levels.
Research shows that testosterone levels are reduced in times of stress. If you experience chronic or high stress, this could be detrimental to maintaining your hormone balance.

Protect your natural testosterone levels by practicing stress relief activities. Exercise is a great place to start – it helps you release excess tension while increasing muscle mass and bone density. Meditation and breathing exercises are other great ways to reduce your stress levels and bring your testosterones into a healthy range.
    2. Eat hormone-healthy foods and manage your weight.
Did you know that what you eat can impact your hormone levels? Try eating more foods for men’s health like shellfish, nuts, and seeds which help support natural testosterone production.

Keeping your weight under control is also key if you want to avoid a drop in testosterone. Studies show that low testosterone is more common in men with more adipose tissue (fat) and that these levels balance out with weight loss.

At Moringa Natural Health Center, we can help you start a healthy weight loss plan, detox, or nutrition program to help you reach your goals and promote natural testosterone production.
    3. Use bio-identical hormone therapy.
If you’re considering testosterone therapy, but are wary of the side effects, bio-identical hormone therapy is an all-natural, safe alternative.Rather than using synthetic testosterone, bio-identical hormone therapy uses plant compounds that act similarly to human hormones. As your body responds to the plant-based compounds, your hormones find their balance and your symptoms resolve naturally – without any side effects.
