Vitamin D and Heart Health

A Crucial Vitamin for Cardiovascular Health + Tips to Boost Your Intake

A Heart Shaped Pills and Medicines on a Marble Surface

With heart disease becoming more and more prevalent (now affecting at least 1 in 20 Americans), treating your heart well has never been so important. But besides eating right and exercising, what can you do to protect your heart?

While it won’t cure heart disease alone, one key nutrient could help you better support your heart and prevent cardiovascular disease: Vitamin D.

Read on to learn why vitamin D is so crucial to maintaining a happy and healthy heart. Then, learn how you can maximize your levels of the sunshine vitamin, even in winter.

What is Vitamin D?

Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that our bodies can produce when exposed to sunlight. Alternatively, we can get vitamin D from the foods we eat.

Vitamin D is essential for many of the body’s daily processes, from growing new cells to managing the immune response to metabolizing your breakfast. Here are some of the key benefits of getting adequate vitamin D:

  • Supports Bone Health
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium and phosphorus, two critical minerals for maintaining strong bones and preventing conditions like osteoporosis.
  • Improves Immunity
Vitamin D plays an important role in immune system modulation. Essentially, it helps your body fight infections and inflammation so you fight off both minor illnesses and serious chronic diseases.
  • Promotes Healthy Skin
Want clear, firm, glowing skin? Get enough vitamin D. This vitamin is necessary for skin cell growth and repair, which makes it particularly helpful for managing skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, and acne. Additionally, vitamin D can help you look and feel younger by reducing those pesky signs of aging. It does so by boosting collagen production to minimize fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Balances Mood
Your blue mood could be linked to low levels of vitamin D. Vitamin D regulates neurotransmitters in the brain, including serotonin, which help you keep a positive mood and avoid depression. Those with low D levels may be more susceptible to seasonal depression, especially during these cold and gray winter months.
  • Enhances Heart Health
A strong cardiovascular system relies on vitamin D to maintain healthy blood pressure and prevent damage to the cardiovascular tissue. This helps prevent issues like heart attacks and heart failure.

Vitamin D for a Healthy Heart

With heart disease consistently topping the charts as our society’s biggest chronic health threat, it’s no surprise that many people are looking for ways to support their heart health. Thankfully, Vitamin D is a tiny nutrient that can make a big difference when it comes to your cardiovascular system.

We’ve seen how vitamin D can help improve whole-body health. Now, let’s explore some of the specific ways this vitamin can be a game-changer for your ticker.

  • Blood Pressure Regulation
Hypertension is a major risk factor for heart disease, yet one of the most common issues we face. One of the most important ways vitamin D supports your heart health is by keeping your blood pressure levels in check. It does so by supporting the endothelium, or the inner tissue layers of your blood vessels. Taking vitamin D can improve blood flow through the vessels to manage blood pressure, and reduce the risk of clot formation to prevent strokes.
  • Inflammation Control
Inflammation doesn’t just make your skin break out or your arthritis flare. Chronic inflammation is also linked to cardiovascular disease. Vitamin D acts as an anti-inflammatory to help suppress excess inflammation in the body and prevent inflammation from harming your blood vessels.
  • Absorption of Key Heart-Health Nutrients
To function properly, your heart needs adequate levels of key vitamins and minerals, including vitamin K, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, and potassium. But without vitamin D, your body may not be able to absorb these nutrients properly, no matter how many healthy foods you eat or supplements you take. When you get enough vitamin D, however, your body can properly absorb and use these key nutrients to support healthy heart rhythm, function, and blood pressure.

How Much Vitamin D Do You Need?

As you can see, getting enough vitamin D isn’t just a good idea – it’s essential for your health! In the summer, many people get their vitamin D from being outside. But during the winter months, it can be harder to get the necessary amount to keep your body working optimally.

The recommended daily intake of vitamin D can vary based on age, gender, and your health condition. However, as a general guideline:

  • Infants up to 12 months: 400-1000 IU (10-25 micrograms) per day.
  • Children and adults up to age 70: 600-800 IU (15-20 micrograms) per day.
  • Adults over age 70: 800-1000 IU (20-25 micrograms) per day.

Not getting enough vitamin D every day? Supplements and IV nutrition therapy can help. With functional medicine and IV nutrition therapy in particular, we can pinpoint how much vitamin D your body needs to thrive, then boost strategically through high-quality intravenous supplementation.

3 Tips to Boost Vitamin D and Heal Your Heart

Ready to boost your vitamin D levels? Here are 3 heart-smart tips to help you reach your vitamin D goals while supporting your cardiovascular system.

  1. Exercise Outside
Take your exercise routine outside to boost your vitamin D and your cardiac fitness. Exercise is a necessary part of a heart-healthy lifestyle, and when you pair your favorite physical activity with a safe exposure to sunlight, you can simultaneously increase your vitamin D levels. Aim for at least 15-30 minutes of sunlight exposure while walking, jogging, cycling, or stretching, several times a week.
  2. Eat Foods with Vitamin D
When you can’t make adequate vitamin D from healthy sun exposure, the next best thing is to boost your diet with vitamin D-rich foods. There aren’t many foods that contain high levels of vitamin D, but these are a good place to start:

    • Fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines)
Fatty fish also contains omega-3 fatty acids, a key nutrient for inflammation control, heart health, and brain health.
    • Fortified dairy products (milk, yogurt, and fortified plant-based milk)
Swap ingredients like mayonnaise or sour cream with probiotic-rich Greek yogurt for a healthier spin on salad dressings and dips.
    • Eggs (especially the yolks)
Ditch the egg-white omelets and enjoy a healthy breakfast or snack with a high vitamin D content.
    • Beef liver
Liver may not be your favorite food, but hiding it in recipes like meatballs or meatloaf can quickly boost your vitamin D and iron levels in a delicious way.
    • Mushrooms (specifically, those exposed to UV light)
Mushrooms are a great plant-based source of protein and vitamin D, and bulk up your meals without adding calories.

  3. Supplement with IV Nutrition Therapy
It’s not always easy to get enough vitamin D from your diet, which is why IV nutritional therapy can be your secret weapon. This therapy infuses your system with high-quality vitamin D (and other nutrients you need) in just the right amount for your body to thrive.
